Founded on November 9th 1881, The Royal Belfast Golf Club is the oldest club in Ireland and its formation proved to be the inspiration for the growth of the game here. it is one of only four golf clubs in Ireland that have been honoured with the title 'Royal', having been visited in 1885 by the Prince of Wales who became the club's first patron. Royal Belfast enjoys a truly spectacular location that is strong among the most beautiful in the entire island. But more importantly, this is beauty with substance, where Colt has used the constant tilt of the land toward the lake to expert effect. The routing of the course includes no less than 13 distinct changes of direction, presenting the need for the player to put more thought into play than might be customary. A good mixture of up and downhill holes just adds to the test, as does the mix of doglegs, right and left. This varied challenge requires accuracy rather than length, with subtle greens that make scoring difficult.
